I don’t like thin and light laptops. Their limited footprint leaves little room for performance. However, I have often been proven wrong because these types of laptops continue to amaze me with their capabilities. By design, it is a kind of office laptop, but thanks to the latest revolution in CPU technology, these laptops are able to do much more. The ASUS Expertbook B1400 is one such capable laptop that I recently tested and here is my opinion on whether you should buy it.

ASUS Expert Book B1400 Review: Benchmarks and Performance

The ASUS Expertbook B1400 is a slim and lightweight laptop designed primarily for office use. In terms of performance, it has an Intel 11th Gen Core i5-1135G7 CPU with 4-core and 8-thread. The CPU has a 28W TDP and Intel Iris Xe also packs a separate graphics chip.

A slim and light laptop should be affordable so I started testing. The quad-core Intel CPU uses the most power during photo editing, gaming, rendering and visualization. Under normal use including opening and closing of various applications, CPU power consumption is around 15W. However, during web browsing, it shoots up to 35W. In terms of the PC Mark 10 synthetic benchmark, the laptop scored 3545. Here’s how the ASUS Expertbook B1400 performed, compared to some other Intel 11th Gen Core i5 powered laptops.

You can see that it is almost compatible with other Core i5 laptops but is located at the lower to middle end of the spectrum in terms of overall performance. I also ran the Cinebench R20 and R23 benchmarks to test laptop CPU performance. Here’s how it performed on some of the other laptops in this price range.

In real-life situations, the laptop handles all the basic tasks, such as photo editing in Vectr, video editing in Filmora, and web browsing in Chrome, very well. It does not lag behind and comes with a dedicated high-performance mode.

In terms of CPU thermal performance, the laptop can be between 75 and 45 degrees Celsius in most cases when browsing the web, running apps, editing documents and spreadsheets. Temperature rises briefly during rendering and visualization, a processing heavy work pressure. However, for the most part, laptops are relatively cool.

I tested some games like Shadow of the Tomb Rider and it scored around 29 FPS. Meanwhile, titles like Valerant and Fornite run smoothly in low settings at 1080p resolution at around 90 to 60 FPS, respectively. In conclusion, the ASUS ExpertBook B1400 performs well in everyday productivity work and is capable of some light gaming.

ASUS Expert Book B1400 Review: Keyboards, Trackpads and Speakers

The build quality of ASUS Expertbook B1400 is good. It has an aluminum lid on top and a steel support bracket for the keyboard. The ASUS laptop has a stiff hinge and has minimal flex on the screen. The base of the laptop that accommodates the keyboard also feels very strong and has a matte-absorbent coating on the surface, which makes it very easy to type for a long time. With an overall weight of 1.45 kg, the laptop is quite portable and thanks to the high build quality, can easily handle the wear and tear involved in daily travel.

Expertbook’s keyboard has 1.5mm key travel. Some laptops come with 1mm key trips and it doesn’t feel good to type in them. The 1.5mm Key Travel ExpertBook keyboard is ideal for most cases. The ASUS laptop also has an advanced lift design that makes typing easier by pushing the keyboard upwards.

On the other hand, the trackpad is also decent. The Expert Book B1400 Laptop Series includes an ASUS NumberPad 2.0, a secondary digital touchpad. However, my special unit came with a simple trackpad and it works fine. The left-click on the trackpad is slightly above the right-click. Naturally, people use left-click more than right-click, so this kind of change is welcome. However, this can only be a build quality inconsistency and not a purposeful feature because there is no such thing mentioned in the laptop’s spec sheet.

ASUS has embedded the ExpertBook B1400 with a fingerprint sensor on the lid of the webcam and power button. Both of them serve a purpose. The laptop has an onboard mic with an AI noise-canceling feature that filters background noise. I checked it and found that it also reduced the volume of my voice. It filters a good portion of the background noise from the fan and AC in the apartment so it’s a decent feature.

The laptop has two downward facing speaker vents and the audio is not good. I recently tested the Infinix INBook X1 and it has many higher speakers in this price range. Lastly, in terms of I / O, the ASUS Expertbook B1400 has display-out and power delivery support, including USB Type-C, two USB 3.2 Type-A ports, and a USB 2.0 Type-A port. In addition to the USB Type-C, the laptop has a D-SUB port to connect to external monitors. In addition, the laptop has an HDMI out slot and an RJ-45 LAN port.

ASUS Expert Book B1400 Review: Display Performance

The display is an area where the Expertbook B1400 laptop disappoints you. It comes with a 14-inch 1080p display with only 232 net brightness Ideally, the screen should have at least 300 net brightness.

The laptop screen has a viewing angle of 178 but some parts of the screen, especially the upper part of it, get darker when you look at it sideways. Laptop screens cover 64.7% sRGB and 47.7% DCI-P3 color spectrum. However, some laptops priced between Rs 50,000 and Rs 60,000 are equipped with much higher specification displays. During the colorchecker analysis, I also noticed that the screen of the laptop was not the right color.

ASUS Expertbook B1400 Review: Battery Life Performance

I checked the battery life of the laptop twice. In the first test, I put the laptop in performance mode, setting the screen color to “touch” and the brightness to 100%. Normally, a laptop can handle 4 hours and 21 minutes of battery life.

In my second attempt, I put the laptop in balance mode, changed the color setting of the screen to “normal” and reduced the brightness to 80%. Now, the laptop has returned 7 hours and 28 minutes of battery life. Therefore, I will keep the battery life of this laptop in real-world use for about 7 hours, which is quite good. The laptop has a 45Wh battery that is slightly smaller than the 55Wh unit that comes with the Infinix INBook X1.

ASUS Expert Book B1400 Review: Conclusion

The ASUS Expertbook B1400 is a well-built laptop with decent performance and high portability. Its small size and high build quality make it a good daily driver and its impeccable keyboard gives it the pleasure of working for hours on end. The low-brightness screen of a laptop is a disaster. However, it is designed for decent battery life, good I / O port selection and high build quality.

Personally, I would attach an external monitor, a mouse and a keyboard to this laptop and use it as a work PC thanks to its great I / O port selection. The laptop is priced at around Rs 55,000 and for that it is a good choice for office work. You can also look at Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5i or Acer Aspire 5 as some other effective alternatives.
