In addition to launching its new Surface Pro device at its Shanghai event yesterday, Microsoft also unveiled a version of Windows 10 designed specifically for the Chinese government and state-owned companies. Windows 10, known as the China Government Edition, the company claims that OST was created by CMIT, a joint venture between Microsoft and CETC.

The special edition OS is based on Windows 10 Enterprise Edition, but it meets the security standards of the Chinese government. The new version will be piloted by three government agencies, including China Customs at the national level, Shanghai City (EITC) at the regional level and Weston Information Technology at the state-owned enterprise level.

Windows 10 Enterprise Edition includes options such as security, identity, installation and management features that governments and enterprises need in their systems. With the official version of Windows 10 China, officials can remove unwanted features and handle all telemetry and updates.

The government may also use its own encryption algorithm in computer systems powered by the official version of Windows 10 China. Lenovo will be one of the first OEM partners to launch the official version of Windows 10 on the new device. Myerson further confirmed that HoloLens will now start shipping to Chinese developers. The company has started taking pre-orders for Surface Studio and will start shipping Surface laptops from June 15.
