Microsoft Xbox One S500GB Console White Review: One Year Too Late?
No one can ignore the fact that the console is a year late to launch in India, which means that if you want an Xbox One S, you’ve probably already got it through other sources. If you are looking to buy one, you can get it cheaply in the gray market without warranty If what you’re looking for is crude functionality, you may want to keep your horses for the Xbox One X. Sony’s PS4 Pro is already available in India at an MRP of Rs 38,990 and if you know where to look, you can get one without a warranty of around Rs 33,000. If you have the original Xbox One, you don’t need to upgrade to Xbox One S because the upgrade is not significant. You may want to turn off the Xbox One X or consider the option.
Microsoft Xbox One S 500GB Console White Detailed Review
The Xbox One S is the successor to the original Xbox One and the predecessor of the Xbox One X, Microsoft’s 4K enabled console. The Xbox One X will be available internationally for $ 499 + tax, which is approx. 36,000 directly converted. Microsoft launched the Xbox One S internationally a year ago. The 500GB variant is priced at Rs 29,990 in India. In the US, the Xbox One S sells for around $ 280, which is about টাকা 20,000. So yes, you are paying more when you buy the console in India.
If you feel comfortable choosing one from the Gray Market, you can get the Xbox One S without warranty for between Rs 18,000 and Rs 22,000 depending on the seller and the city. But you knew it, didn’t you?
Spec-to-spec comparisons between Xbox One S and PS4, PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro are available across the Internet. The point we are going to talk about here is whether you should get one? Is it worth it? What are the options and which is the right console for you? Of course, we’ll keep the Xbox One S at the center, since this is the Xbox One S review.
Construction and design
Closing things with build and design, it is quite different from the original Xbox One. Large VCRs like the design have been replaced with a smooth white console that will make any entertainment center look sexy. The console can also be propped vertically, but you’ll need to buy an extra stand for it. The big and ugly power brick is gone and is now built into the console. The on button is no longer touch sensitive. This is a physical button, which is a very good thing, because the original Xbox will close even with a little touch of the button.
For connectivity options, you have an Ethernet port, optical out, IR port, 2 USB ports, an HDMI, HDMI out and power socket on the port. There is a USB port on the front. There is no Kinect port on the console and you will need to purchase a separate adapter if you want to use Kinect. Microsoft has officially stopped producing Kinect, which requires you to know everything you need to know about the company’s motion sensing gadget.
Overall, the build and design of the Xbox One S is much better than its predecessor. The only downside is that since it is white, the console will get dirty very easily and you need to clean it regularly.
The controller is similar to the Xbox One, with a few key changes. This time it’s a Bluetooth controller, so, yes! It’s white, which means you have to try to keep it clean. It has a textured back, which is a subtle change compared to the controller you got with the original Xbox One, but it makes a big difference for those who sweat a lot. It provides better grip.
The Xbox One controller was one of the best in terms of ergonomics, and these subtle changes make it even better. The only downside to the controller is that it still runs on two AA batteries, which is a bummer. If you want the controller to work as rechargeable, you need to invest in a play and charge kit.
Xbox One S vs PS4: Which Should You Consider?
If you watch third-party games, they run almost equally on both consoles. Yes, there are times when third-party games on the PS4 run at a better resolution or framerate (like The Witcher 3, Doom, etc.), but this is not honestly a breach of contract. You will barely notice the difference. I played Doom on both machines and the experience was both entertaining.
This should be the deciding factor for you. For obvious reasons you won’t be able to play the upcoming Death Stranding, God of War, The Uncharted Games, Last of Us and much more on Xbox. However, the Xbox has some fantastic exclusives, including Gears of War, Halo, Cuphead, Ori and the Blind Forest, Forza, Sunset Overdrive and many more. If you want to play online with your friends, you will get the console they have. Which exclusive you like and which console your friends have, should be the number one decision for you. The PlayStation Exclusive has a larger library than the Xbox, though it needs to be mentioned.
There’s been a lot of debate online about whether or not retrograde compatibility has been created, and I think that’s it. I have a lot of Xbox 360 games and I can play them on OneS, with backwards compatibility. I missed a great game like Alan Wake when it was launched in 360 and it was only a chance to play on my Xbox One. Backwards compatibility is a factor worth considering. Microsoft has announced compatibility behind the original Xbox games and will only add it to your personal library.
Sony, on the other hand, has made it clear that backwards compatibility is not something they are considering.
If you like gaming on your PC and Xbox One, Microsoft has you covered there as well. When you own an ‘Xbox Play Anywhere Digital Title’, you can play on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs. Needless to say, all upcoming Xbox One exclusive games can be played anywhere.
External HDD support
Both Xbox One and PS4 support external hard drives via USB ports. You need to make sure that the external drive is USB 3.0 compatible. Whether it’s just a 500GB or a 4TB drive, you can expand your console’s storage by simply plugging in an external drive.
Home Entertainment is a place where Xbox One S surpasses PS4 and PS4 Pro 6 Initially, it has 4K HDR Blu-ray support, which is not supported by competing consoles. If you have a compatible system, it supports Dolby Atmos, which is another thing missing from the PS4. Both consoles support Netflix in 4K, while at the time of writing this review, Amazon Prime Video or Hotstar apps for consoles are not available in India.
Online gaming and free games
You need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play online games. You get a 14-day free trial when you pick the console, but here’s why you should consider sticking with it.
- You get about 5 free games per month with your Gold subscription. It has three Xbox One titles and two Xbox 360 titles, which you can play using backwards compatibility.
- You can play multiplayer online games with your friends.
- You get special discounts on games every month.
Xbox Live Gold membership costs 699 rupees per month, or you can pay 3999 rupees for 12 months at a time.
There is something similar about Sony’s offer. You will get two PS4 games with your PS Plus subscription with the ability to play online multiplayer games. You will also get PS Plus special discount.
The PlayStation Plus subscription costs 5 599 per month, or you can pay 44 4439 for 12 months. There is also a quarterly subscription, which costs Rs.
Xbox game pass
Xbox Game Pass is a subscription service for games like Netflix. You pay 6 699 per month (this is different from your Gold subscription) and you get access to a large library of games to download and play (over a hundred). Libraries are refreshed every month (just like Netflix). This does not mean that all games change every month. Some are added and some are removed. If you like a game you are playing with Game Pass and want to own it, you will get 10 percent discount. This is a great option for those who are new to gaming and want instant access to a large library of new and good games on Xbox and don’t want to buy overnight.
There is no such service on Sony’s platform.
Should You Buy Xbox One S?
Well, that’s the million dollar question. To answer, I would like to reiterate that if you watch third party games, they run almost equally on both consoles. Yes, there are times when third-party games on the PS4 run at better resolution or framerate, but this is not a deal breaker. Your decision should be based on only two factors – which console you prefer exclusively and which console your friends are playing on. The latter is only if you want to play online. Microsoft has a number of services to offer the console a tempting offer, such as backwards compatibility, 4K Blu-ray playback and more.
