Jolla Ltd., the Finnish mobile company and developer of the open mobile operating system Sailfish OS, today announced Sailfish 3, the third generation of its standalone mobile operating system, with new device support for Sony’s Xperia XA2, Gemini PDA, and INOI tablets. Selfish is now available for the new era of 4G feature phones

This is the year of Sailfish 3, the next generation of the world’s only alternative mobile operating system. Sailfish 3 is the result of rigorous development work and efforts put together by Jolla’s licensing partners and the Sailfish community.

Sami Pianimaki, CEO of Zola, commented: “Selfish OS has evolved from the Zola device OS, to support various major regional mobile ecosystem projects and a large number of mobile devices. We are very proud to be moving into third generation in our OS development, and believe it will provide a great upgrade for all our B2G, B2B and community customers. “

Jolla provides full support for Sailfish 3 for regional infrastructure including static releases and OS upgrades, independent research and development center installation services, local hosting, training and a flexible feature set to meet specific customer needs. Sailfish 3 will also have enhanced security features and options, which will take the level of independence to the next level and make it a solid alternative to a variety of corporate solutions.

Selfish 3 will be launched in phases in Q3 / 2018 for all licensees and customers.

New Selfish Device has been announced

Sailfish OS is now officially supported on more than a dozen mobile devices and through the Sailfish community. The support feature extends a variety of form factors, including phones, wearables, tablets, corporate solutions, and a range of smartphones. In addition to Sailfish 3, the downloadable version of Jolla OS, Sailfish X, will expand to newer devices, such as the Gemini PDA.

New Sailfish devices announced at MWC 2018 include upcoming support for the new Sony’s Xperia XA2. In collaboration with Sony Open Device Program, Jolla will provide Sailfish OS for Xperia XA2. Through the Sailfish X program, interested technologists can purchase an official Sailfish X license and install the OS on their brand new Sony Xperia XA2 device. The software will be available in the summer of 2018.

Also, Planet Computer’s great Gemini PDA is coming soon with Sailfish OS. The popular, crowd-funded Gemini PDA is a next-generation mobile PDA that has a fully functional physical keyboard and is now being rolled out to its first customers. The Sailfish OS version was first demoed and shown to the public at MWC 2018. Further availability will be announced later

The third new Selfish device announced at MWC 2018 is the new tablet from Russian brand INOI. The new INOI tablets come in two different versions: 8 “INOI T8 and 10” INOI T10. The device primarily targets Russian corporate customers.

Selfish OS is now available for feature phones

MWC 2018 is also showcasing a whole new segment for Jolla Sailfish OS: a new era of highly capable 4G feature phones.

Sami Pienimäki continues: “What sets Selfish OS apart from its competitors in the feature phone segment is its ability to perform low-specific hardware configurations and still run selected Android apps thanks to our unique solution. Sailfish OS also enables VoLTE, which is becoming increasingly important for a new era in this segment. ”
